The Greene County Rams split a pair of basketball games as they hosted the South Hamilton Hawks for a Mega Night Dec. 13.
The girls won their third game in a row. It’s the first time since January of 2015 the girls have won three consecutive games. They’re now 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.
The Rams led the entire game, up 10-4 after one quarter, up 20-11 at intermission, and up 31-20 after three quarters on their way to a 40-31 win.
Laurin Lyons scored 14 points with one 3-pointer and five of six free throws. Taylor Wessling scored 10 points with two 3-point baskets and Kenna Marquart also had 10 points. Onica Delp scored four points and Hannah Promes had two.
Delp led in rebounds with five, while Marquart and Lyons each had four.
As a team the Rams were 12 of 32 in 2-point shots and three of four in 3-point shots for 41.6 percent shooting. They made 13 of 17 free throws for a healthy 76 percent.
The boys lost for the second time this season in a fast-paced game. The Hawks brought a 4-0 record into the game. They averaged 56 points per game and allowed an average of just 34.5 points. Final score against the 5-1 Rams was 67-63.
It was a battle between two seniors – the Rams’ Trey Tucker and the Hawks’ Collin Hill. Neither disappointed fans. Tucker scored 27 points with 67 percent shooting from both 2-point range and 3-point range and he made three of four free throws. He also led the team in assists with seven and committed just one foul for the game.
Hill scored 31 points with 64 percent shooting from the floor and 75 percent shooting long buckets.
The Rams fell behind in the first quarter by a score of 26-17, but had a strong second quarter to end the half down by just one point at 34-33. They dominated in the third quarter, scoring 17 points at the Hawks scored 12, and the home team was ahead 50-46 after three. The Hawks tied the game at 57 with 3:23 to play. In the final stanza the Rams committed five turnovers, and that made the difference. They had 11 turnovers for the game, while the Hawks had just six.
Wade Adcock fouled out of the game with 27 seconds to play. That was the first time a Ram fouled out this season. He scored 16 points, making six of 7 field goals and four of four free throws.
Trey Hinote and Thomas Jacobsen scored seven points each, and both had a 3-point basket. Jacobsen led in rebounds with nine. Lance Hughes’ six point total included a tres as well.
As a team the Rams made 24 of 40 2-point shots and seven of 16 3-point shots for 55 percent shooting. They made eight of 10 free throws for 80 percent. The Hawks were 44 percent shooting from the floor and 57 percent from the free throw line.
The boys are now 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the HOIAC. They travel to Nevada Friday to play the Cubs, who are 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
